Following the Society of Critical Care Medicine recommendations, the MAT recommends using High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) over BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) and CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) (both also referred to as Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV) for COVID-19 treatment due to the risk of BiPAP and CPAP machines aerosolizing infection. In adults with COVID-19 and acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, if HFNC is not available and there is no urgent indication for endotracheal intubation, the recommendation is to try NIPPV with close monitoring and short-interval assessment for worsening of respiratory failure. All adults with COVID-19 receiving NIPPV or HFNC should be closely monitored for worsening of respiratory status, and early intubation should be performed in a controlled setting if worsening occurs.
